President Donald Trump, referring to Haitians and “Africans” said:
“Why do we want all these people from ‘shithole countries’ coming here?”
Among Haitian immigrants ages 16 and older, 71 percent participated in the civilian labor force, compared to 66 percent of the overall foreign-born population and 62 percent of the U.S.-born population. The median household income for Haitians in 2015 was higher than for Caribbean immigrant households. Haitian immigrant households had a median income of $47,200 in 2015 dollars, compared to $42,400 for Caribbean households.
Haitians were about as likely to live in poverty as the overall immigrant population (18 percent compared to 17 percent) and the Caribbean foreign-born population (19 percent).
Between 2015 and 2016, US median household income rose 3.2% from $57,230 to $59,039, according to a new report released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Tuesday. Thus Hatian immigrants are close to the average household income of the average American. The official poverty rate in America is 13.5 percent, based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2015 estimates. That year, an estimated 43.1 million Americans lived in poverty according to the official measure. Poverty is defined as an individual income of $12,082. Thus the average Hatian immigrant has an average income far above the 43.1 Americans who live in poverty.
For Trump to refer to Hatians and Africans as coming from “shithole” countries is simply unforgivable! He is a disgrace to everything America stands for. I join Philip Mudd when I say that I am proud to be a “Shit-holer-er.”
