Even before being elected President, Trump used his status as a candidate for President to advertise things that were designed to make him money. Nothing was more obvious that his promotion of his new book Crippled America.
Donald Trump has been the President of the United States for 8 months. During that time he has not divested himself of his investments, he has not produced his tax returns, and he has not stopped using the office of the President to promote his investments.
Before his inauguration President-elect Donald Trump’s
biography on his transition website sold himself as a successful businessman, aggressively promoting his vast web of “properties around the globe.”
“In New York City and around the world, the Trump signature is synonymous with the most prestigious addresses in the world.”
The Mar-a-Lago Club raised its initiation fee from
$100,000 to $200,000 after Trump was elected and members and former members around Mar-a-Lago have said there is now an added cachet with frequently visiting the President’s club.
Trump also used the State Department to promote Mar-a-lago.
The President’s family has also taken advantage of Donald’s Presidency, brazenly promoting their products. Ivanka’s clothing line was just one example. Her line was ranked No. 550 based on the number of orders from Lyst, the biggest fashion e-commerce website in the world, according to
Forbes. However sales of her products skyrocketed in early February, catapulting her line to Lyst’s 11th most popular brand. The biggest spike, according to Lyst, came on Feb. 9, when sales jumped by 219 percent from the day before. Feb. 9th was the day that White House counselor Kellyanne Conway promoted Trump’s clothing and jewelry line on “Fox & Friends.”
“Go buy Ivanka’s stuff is what I would tell you,” Conway said. “I’m going to give a free commercial here. Go buy it today, everybody.”
Then there was a State Department office that helped Ivanka promote her new book. The State Department retweeted
Ivanka Trump’s post promoting her new book. That post was a clear violation of a federal rule that bars the use of public office for private gain.
A federal government employee “
shall not use his public office for his own private gain, for the endorsement of any product, service or enterprise, or for the private gain of friends, relatives, or persons with whom the employee is affiliated in a nongovernmental capacity,” according to the Code of Federal Regulations (5 CFR 2635.702, to be specific).
Donald has made his first appearance at the United Nations, and once again, he used this opportunity to promote his private business interest. This time is was Trump’s building located within a block of the United Nations building.
Trump World Tower, a residential skyscraper across the street from the U.N. headquarters, is the building Donald Trump promoted in his address to the members of the United Nations in his official capacity as the President of the United States. The government of Saudi Arabia has already purchased the entire 45th floor. It appears Trump is hoping to entice other countries to follow suit. Trump said:
