Trump Advocates an End to His Twitter Remarks

If Donald Trump is known for anything, it is his remarks posted on the internet via Twitter.  It is Trump’s use of Twitter that has come to define his presidency and is probably responsible for his election.  Yet, Trump’s recent Tweet advocated an end to the internet.

Trump’s remarks came in response to a terrorist attack in London that resulted in injury to 22 people.  Trump responded to the terror incident at Parsons Green Tube station by saying that the internet was a terrorist “recruiting tool”.  “Loser terrorists must be dealt with in a much tougher manner,” he wrote. “The internet is their main recruitment tool which we must cut off & use better!”  He went on to double down on his hope to ban Muslims from America.  “The travel ban into the United States should be far larger, tougher and more specific-but stupidly, that would not be politically correct!

The sheer stupidity of Trump’s proposal to shut down the internet is obvious.  He was using the internet to suggest we should shut it down.  Internet is today one of the most important part of our daily life.   The internet has become an essential tool for communication, research, education, financial transactions, real time updates, travel, bookings, job searches, blogging, and shopping.  The reason we know about the London terrorist attack, and Trump’s response, is due to the terrorist attack.  If we didn’t have the internet, terrorists could communicate through telephone or mail.  That wouldn’t be a reason for us to stop using the telephone or mail.  Of course the internet is the world’s primary method of communication.  Thus the fact that terrorists use the internet is not surprising …but predictable.  Instead of working to shut it down completely, we should use it more effectively to identify, locate, and thwart terrorist attacks.

  1. Whenever we network with anyone, especially on Wifi, we open the door to hackers. On social media we open another door to a variety of dangerous people. We have reached a point where the notion “Big brother is watching you” needs to be discarded. Now we need a lifeguard watching the pool we call networks.

We had an excellent setup with NSA monitoring all traffic. They ignore our personal lives, unless they get a hit on patterns that indicate criminal or terrorist activity. No human is watching or reading your messages. The computer program monitors all of the data and flags suspicious combinations.

Simple analogy, stuck at a railroad crossing watching and endless flow of boxcars, then there’s an oil tanker in the middle of them. Mistake or a rolling bomb with a timer? Using Trump’s logic we would tear up all of the railroads to stop tank car bombs.
