Remember when Trump said he’d “bomb the shit out of ISIS?”
That’s one promise he kept. The United States has dropped a massive GBU-43 bomb, also known as the “mother of all bombs,” in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday against a series of caves used by Islamic State militants, the military said.
It was the first time this type of bomb had been used in combat. It was dropped from a MC-130 aircraft.
The GBU-43 bomb weighs 21,600 pounds, is 30 feet long, and contains 11 tons of explosives.
General John Nicholson, the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, was required to get permission to use the weapon, but it’s unclear how far up the chain of command his request traveled. News sources are not reporting whether any ISIS members were actually killed. We can also presume that Trump didn’t seek Congressional approval for use of the bomb.
