No rest for the weary…unless you are Donald Trump. Trump has set a new record for the President who took vacation the fastest! President Barack Obama made it four months into his presidency before his first golf outing. George W. Bush made it even longer, first hitting the links as president about 5 ½ months into his first term. President Trump made it in two weeks.”
Today is Saturday, so you can predict that President Trump is at his opulent Mar a lago Resort in Palm Beach. This weekend marks the third weekend in a row that Trump has spent at the Mar a lago Resort. That’s an impressive accomplishment for the man who declared that he would “rarely leave the White House because there’s so much work to be done.” He went on to explain that if elected “I would not be a president who took vacations. I would not be a president that takes time off.”
Now it appears that not only has Trump engaged in a pattern of taking multiple vacations before his presidency is even a month old. The cost of these opulent vacations to the American taxpayer is staggering. Trump’s three Mar-a-Lago trips since the inauguration have cost the federal treasury an estimated $10 million. That estimate doesn’t include the tens of thousands of dollars that Palm Beach County officials plan to ask Washington to pay for expenses for deputies handling added security and traffic issues around the cramped Florida island whenever Trump is in town.
Even more offensive is the vast sums of money being made by Trump from the Mar a lago Resort. Membership fees alone are staggering. An estimated 40 new memberships will be sold this year, at a price tag of $200,000 each. That’s twice the membership fee charged before Trump was elected. The resort currently charges a $14,000 annual fee to its 500 members. That means that Donald Trump is taking in 15 Million Dollars in membership fees at Mar a logo, before anyone has paid for a single bottle of water.
Consider, and imagine the cost that could be added for, “Trump Card Privileges“. “What sets The Mar-a-Lago Club apart from any other club in the world are the extraordinary suites. Ornately carved and hand-painted Moorish ceilings, spectacular ocean views from balconies and verandas with antique Spanish-tiled mosaics all lend historical beauty to every suite.”
Trump’s “steakhouse on steroids” is a gold mine for Trump. Trump has even promoted the resort by referring to it as the “Southern White House.”
“Mar-a-Lago represents a commercialization of the presidency that has few if any precedents in American history,” said Jon Meacham, a presidential historian and Andrew Jackson biographer. “Presidents have always spent time with the affluent,” he added. “But a club where people pay you as president to spend time in his company is new. It is kind of amazing.” [The New York Times]
In case a guest forgot who owned the Resort, Trump has a portrait of himself to remind the guests who they are supporting with their annual dues.
