People in Alaska just know how to live responsibly. All Sarah’s kids have consistently worked since circa age 15. None expected parents to pay for non-need based things. Meaning if it didn’t relate to food and housing etc, they bought it themselves. They were given chores and expected to learn basic things. (ie they wouldn’t be that 20 year old at a laundromat confused at how it works) The US needs more people with that independent mentality, who don’t waste others’ money in college. I personally am grateful for parents who raised me to be able to cook for myself at 12 and fund my college tuition to graduate debt free. My parents were also middle class like Sarah.
