When It Comes to Sarah Palin, Always Consider the Source!

The May 10th 2010 edition of Time Magazine arrived in the mail with the cover story “The 100 Most Influential People in the World”. I have to admit that given the publicity surrounding Sarah Palin, and the fact that people have been willing to pay her $100,000 for speeches, which of course they have heard before, I wasn’t too surprised to find Sarah Palin’s name on the list.  I expected that the article would focus on the sheer number of people who have been taken in by Palin.  Last time I checked she had over one million “fans” on Facebook.  However to my amazement, the article was very complimentary of the person Sarah Palin purports to be.  The author seemed to lack any understanding or appreciation for the hypocrisy of Palin.  The article stated that Palin “…dedicates herself to make America better…represents the good, while exposing the bad and ugly” and has a “…herculean work ethic”. I found each of these observations to be contrary of all that I knew about Palin, unless of course her resignation from the position of Governor of Alaska was her effort to “make America better”.  The only “herculean work ethic I have heard about relates to the effort it must take to manage the wealth she has amassed.  Certainly Levi Johnston didn’t describe a “herculean” work ethic in his description of Sarah often coming home early and retiring to her bedroom to watch television for the rest of the evening. http://www.vanityfair.com/online/daily/2009/09/levi-johnston.html

As my disbelief was mounting, I reached the end of the short article, and realized that the author did not even purport to be objective about the “real” Sarah Palin.  Rational thought was not something upon which this author puts a premium.   The last sentence explained that “I’d be proud to share a moose-barbecue campfire with the Palin family anytime, so long as I can shoot the moose.” The author of this article was Ted Nugent.  Until that moment the only thing I knew about Ted was that he was older than me, and had been a rock-n-roll legend.  Let me share what I have learned.

1.  Mr. Nugent is personal friends with Glenn Beck.  Of course Palin and Beck are buddies, as indicated by her authorship of the story of Glenn Beck in the same Time Magazine article.

2.  Mr. Nugent has repeatedly served as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Rifle Association.

3.  Mr. Nugent has had a very colorful personal life.  He does have a high school diploma.  He lacks a college education, so he, Todd Palin, Glen Beck, and Rush Limbaugh have a common bond. By his own account Nugent has urinated on a nun.  He stopped all forms of personal hygiene for a month and showed up for his draft board physical in pants caked with his own urine and feces.   In 1978, when Ted was 30, he was involved romantically with a 17 year old girl. (At that time he was about 13 years older than this teenager.  That is about the same age disparity between him and Sarah Palin.)  He has been married to two other females (both were older than the 17 years old when they married).  Despite being married to Shemane Nugent, Ted fathered a child out of wedlock with a woman with whom he had a “brief relationship” in New Hampshire.

4.  Famous quotes by Mr. Nugent include:

Apartheid isn’t that cut and dry. All men are not created equal. The
preponderance of South Africa is a different breed of man. I mean that with
no disrespect. I say that with great respect. I love them because I’m one of
them. They are still people of the earth, but they are different. They still
put bones in their noses, they still walk around naked, they wipe their
butts with their hands.  Detroit Free Press Magazine

On Hillary Clinton:
“Toxic cunt. This bitch is nothing but a two-bit whore for Fidel Castro.”
–Westworld Newspaper

On Women:
“I met a couple guys in line yesterday who go, ‘Write something to my girlfriend, she won’t let me go hunting.’ I wrote her something and I said, ‘Drop dead, bitch.’ What good is she, trade her in, and get a Dalmatian. Who needs the wench?”
–WRIF FM Radio, Detroit, Michigan

He also called Senator Dianne Feinstein a “worthless whore.”

On Homosexuality:
A “despicable act” performed by “guys that have sex with each other’s anal
–Hannity and Colmes

On Animal Rights:

Nugent once said in an interview, “I’m stymied to come up with anything funnier than people who think animals have rights. Just stick an arrow through their lungs.”

In a 1992 radio interview, Nugent referred to Heidi Prescott of the Fund for Animals as a “worthless whore” and a “shallow slut,” asking “who needs to club a seal, when you can club Heidi?”  Following this remark Mr. Nugent was sued and ordered by a court to pay $75,000.

On Barack Obama:

During a concert in 2007, while Barack Obama was campaigning for president, Nugent said to the audience “Obama, he’s a piece of shit. I told him to suck on my machine gun.” In the same interview, he said regarding Hillary Clinton,” I was in NY and I said hey Hillary—you might want to ride one of these into the sunset you worthless bitch.” In an interview with Royal Flush Magazine, Nugent was asked about his views of U.S. President Barack Obama, and he responded: “I think that Barack Hussein Obama should be put in jail. It is clear that Barack Hussein Obama is a communist. Mao Tse Tung lives and his name is Barack Hussein Obama. This country should be ashamed. I wanna throw up.”

On Healthcare:

He also claims he is an expert on the healthcare bill, because “I kill pigs”.  He elaborated, saying that “communist, Mao, Che agenda of the communist, Mao, Che fans in the White House. They’re pigs, Neil! We gotta kill the pig.”

On Gun Control:

If these comments are not sufficient to convince you that Ted Nugent is unstable, watch this video, where he explains “I get to carry a gun nation-wide.  I want warriors to have the tools necessary to stop evil.”

I now have more insight into the person chosen to write such kind words about Sarah.  I wonder if she considers him to be “MEAN SPIRITED”.  Two things perplexed me.  First it was hard to reconcile Mr. Nugent’s attitude regarding avoiding military service with Sarah Palin’s praise of the military.  The second disconnect for me was that Mr. Nugent has been an outspoken critic of alcohol, but of course Sarah gave the keynote address to the Wholesale Liquor Distributors convention in Las Vegas.  Then I realized that I should stop trying to make logical sense of the choice of Ted Nugent as the author.  The problem probably was not that she didn’t know what God would say about her; but that Time Magazine probably wouldn’t allow “God” to be the author.

The most telling observation is who did NOT write the article about Palin for Time Magazine.  It would seem to me that logical candidates for this honor might have included John McCain, Michael Steele, anyone from FOX news, anyone from the McCain Campaign staff, Sean Parnell (the person who took over for Palin when she resigned as Governor of Alaska), a hockey mom from Alaska, Lynn Vincent (the ghost writer of Going Rogue, who is now a right to life advocate, even though she herself admits to having an abortion), Pastor Muthee (the one who hunted witches in Alaska, and was Sarah’s pastor),  or a representative of “special needs kids” for whom she could have devoted herself, but has not.  If Ted Nugent was the best person to grace us with his wisdom and insight into Sarah Palin, then the end of Sarah’s celebrity status is close at hand.  One valuable lesson for all of us is …when reading anything about Sarah Palin, always consider the source.

  1. Why would TIME let a radical, obvious Palin-Blinded piece of work comment on her.
Thanks for sharing what I never planned to read anyway. I think all these contests are like American Idol. Who gives a r**sarse who’s on their list.
    Thank YOU though!

    1. jrhoard, I think that once they put her on the list, they probably gave the people the choice of who they wanted to write the article. Either Palin chose, or Time did, but in either case it tells you they were desperate to find someone to write about her.Malia

      1. Palingates had a post up the other day which featured a transcript of a conversation between Glenn Beck and his BFF Ms. Palin and included them discussing the Time list. Beck stated he didn’t know Sarah had written the blurb about him, so I assume Palin would not have known that Nugent would be writing about her.

      2. Christine, Thanks again for the cartoon! I contacted the paper, purchased the right to the cartoon, and have submitted it to Huffington Post. We will see if they can add it to the article.

Things have been so busy here that I haven’t gotten to Palingates today, but I will. Thanks, Malia

    1. Pam, My question exactly…until you watch the you tube video of Nugent, and then you will see that perhaps what they all have is common is some type of mental insufficiency. Malia

  2. Yes, thank you for sharing what I too never planned to read. I don’t understand (maybe I just don’t want to acknowledge) what has happened to Time magazine and the Washington Post.

    1. Daisydem, I think the fact that it was Ted Nugent writing the article that someone at Time must not like her much. What do you think? Malia

      1. I would like to agree with you, Malia, that it was someone at Time that allowed Nugent to write the article because he or she thought it would discredit Palin. If that’s the case, that is playing only to some of its more educated and culturally-aware readers. It may backfire and simply boost her rep amongst those who are borderline followers.

My opinion of Time has been declining through the Bush-Cheney years, and I cannot bring myself to be as generous as to their motives as you.

      2. ks, I know that they might not have the motivation that I hope, but I try to be optomistic! Malia

      3. You know, I think that must be the answer. When I first saw that I thought, “Ted Nugent? WTF?” I thought that was a little odd and I can’t imagine I wasn’t the only one to think that.

        Now it makes sense!

Thanks for letting us know what Ted’s been up to…I really hadn’t been paying much attention to anything he has to say, which apparently isn’t much.

      4. Christine, I didn’t know any of this until doing the research for this article, and I was amazed…at what I learned…and that Palin would agree to have him be her representative. malia

  3. Wow. Thanks for the details. He does sound like a perfect match for Palin.

It’s good to know who Palin is palling around with these days.

    1. Trisha, yes, a perfect match indeed! If you watch the you tube video of Nugent, you will really be scared. Malia

  4. When Time placed Paylin on their list of 100 most influential, I lost all respect for Time Mag, a magazine I used to love because she promotes the WRONG TYPE of influence.

When I was 18 years old, I loved the song by Ted Nugent, ‘I’m Just 17’, despite knowing he was ugly and creepy even then [that’s been close to 40 years ago]. But today, knowing what I know about him, my perspective on his has changed; I KNOW he is worse than any creep because he is as dangerous as Paylin is and that is FRIGHTENING. They are two CRAZIES let loose on America who have the ability, because of their wealth and emotional instability, to wreak havoc on our country. Neither of them deserve to be recognized in any way by our media despite free speech because their speech is ‘inciting violence’ just like the KKK and that should simply not be tolerated or recognized in America. Once the media stops paying any attention [which means their profits will slide] to the ‘Whore of Babble On’, America can begin to breathe once again.

DaisyDem, you absolutely have the right pulse on the WaPo [as a resident of Northern VA, it was always a paper that was essential reading in our house] as it used to be a great newspaper, but now it is just another rag for the right wing and not worth the paper it’s written on. Thank you Malia for your great articles and your blog.

    1. Disparaged, Don’t be disparaged! I am hopeful…more than ever …that people, men and women, Republicans and Democrats, recognize the fundamental problems with Sarah Palin. What happens over the next few months will tell the real story. Malia

  5. Thank you for doing all this homework on Ted Nugent. Now we know three things:
    1. Palin’s handlers helped Nugent with what to say about Palin, hence the reasonable literacy and utter lack of realism about her views, her record, her values. The whole article smells of a P.R. agent cranking overtime from boilerplate about a client.
    2. Nugent is a very ugly, racist human and therefore not surprisingly a fan of Palin’s.
    3. TIME magazine has sold out its brand as a serious news magazine with this advertorial approach to content. I’ll never pick up another copy at the news stand.

The only good news out of the oil-spill catastrophe is that Palin’s time is up. She is finally suffering from over-exposure. Her superficial, sound byte “common sense” solutions to complex economic and world problems aren’t working.

Note: TIME’s decision to allow shoddy content is not dis-similar to the mistakes that USC and Discovery have made. In going for the glitz with a barely literate speaker/host, both have damaged the credibility of their brands and have driven donors/viewers elsewhere.

    1. bweyand, Thanks for the comment, and I too was appalled by all that I learned about Nugent. He is pathetic! Malia

  6. Saw Nugent in concert many years ago. Didn’t go to see him but band following his show and wasn’t looking forward to having to sit thru his act first.

Right out of the gate he started with his anti-foreigner tirade. Speak my language only crap or you can get the #@%$ out of my country. Spent another 10 mins ranting about the evils of non-whites so no wonder he sees kindred spirit in Mrs. Palin. 2 peas in a pod.

    1. madcitychick, I never saw him in concert, so I don’t remember much. Thanks for sharing your experience with us, and yes learning about him makes me sick! malia

  7. Ted Nugent is one of the nastiest individuals on this planet so it’s hardly surprising he is a “friend” of Sarah’s. He has also been a speaker at several (all?) the T-Party “Express” rallies of which Glenn Beck/Sarah Palin/Fox News are associated with. What Nugent says (lies) about President Obama is just downright mean and hateful. But at least he hasn’t been hired by a cable news show, not yet.

Speaking of which: I stopped reading Time magazine long ago. I refuse to watch Fox and rarely CNN. I regularly watch Rachel Maddow, Keith Olberman and sometimes the Ed Show on MSNBC, but not their other programmes which are almost as bad as CNN’s: In the early part of April, CNN was embedded with the T-Party Express — Fox did the same last year — and hired fact-challenged, hate-monger, far-right blogger Eric Erickson, whose web blog is called RedState.

Prior to 8 November 2008 no president was stripped of his title (not even Bush) the way today’s Republicans — including Sarah who insists on being called Governor — have stripped the President by referring to him as Obama. Nor has a president ever been accused of being unpatriotic, questioned about his loyalty nor so disrespected.

I re_member President Clinton getting attacked constantly by the right-wing, but it was never as bad as now. It seems to have started when Sarah Palin came on the scene with her trash-talking about then-Senator Obama whereby she opened the floodgates and ever since has grown into a free-for-all hate-fest on the President and the Democrats.

I worry about where all of this will lead. I believe things will probably get worse, but ultimately things will be better. (If Sarah would STFU it might hasten the latter).

    1. rainbow13, I see you are in Texas, so I am glad to have a friend in the state. I agree, and wish she would shut up, but for now we have to remain diligent and respond to anything she says. malia

      1. Thank you Malia. Iam in Dallas and you?

Also I agree we need to stay vigilant to make sure she doesn’t get away with anything!

      2. rainbow13, There are more of us than you might think in Dallas! Look at our votes in the election of 2008 and you will see that the majority of people in Dallas voted for Obama! malia

  8. Palin wrote Beck’s article.

    Nugent wrote Palin’s article.

The above facts reveal that TIME magazine is just perpetuating the right-wing’s “echo chamber” mentality. Is the joke on Palin, Beck, and Nugent? Or is the joke on the uneducated reader? Regardless, it’s a disservice to reinforce the echo chamber model of discussion which is so rampant and destructive to our society currently.

  9. Meant to add: Outstanding column, Malia!

Your last paragraph says it all, beginning with: “The most telling observation is who did NOT write the article about Palin for Time Magazine….”

    1. cbloeff55, So many people forget to think about who did NOT do something, and you would think that if there were a single Republican who would be willing to write for her, that they would. malia

  10. To think that Palin has sunk so low that nobody but Nugent would write the forward for her! And then she writes Beck’s as if it is an honor, that dipshit probably thinks it is, LOL There’s not a woman I know and admire that would allow that piece of scum to even open a door for them, let alone be associated with him and memorialized forever via the written word.

Do you think Palin knows what a piece of crap Ted Nugent truly is? I’d heard far worse things prior to today but her very own staff didn’t mention that it might not be a good idea to go forth with this nonsense? Or did she just not listen to them, AGAIN, and do her own thing–ya know, lettin’ Sarah be Sarah and all that other B.S. that babble about her??

Big friggin’ deal, he’s a Conservative! Did she forget or not care that he’s also a misogynistic piece of dirt that shouldn’t be allowed within 100 feet of any young girls? Remember how uncomfortable Piper looked during the Rick Perry gig in Texas? What do you think Nugent said to 8 year old Piper and is it able to be repeated in decent company? I doubt it very much.

Where’s Cons4Palin when there needs to be something said about the truth behind the Time piece? I can’t wait to see what kind of nonsense they come up with to defend Nugent’s disgusting background and Palin’s association with him. They always find a way to defend their quitter queen, whether it makes any sense or is truthful, remains to be seen.

  11. So I was curious about how Time picks their top 100 and I watched a video on their website. They state that they pick individuals who, through their actions and ideas, are changing the world “mostly for the better”. They also stated that they “try to pick equally luminary writers who have a relationship with the subject”. Ted Nugent…luminary….defined as “one that is an inspiration to others”, “a leading light”, “one who has acheived success in his chosen field”. (Rolling eyes and shaking head) I prefer Malia’s take on it–Time didn’t think enough of SP to enlist a halfway credible writer.

Malia, I’m sorry he’s now in your state but I’m glad he’s out of mine. We’ve had problems with militia types lately.

  12. With every respect to you all, I take it that Time’s use of ‘world’ is based on the same defintion as that of the world series in baseball. Seen from across the Atlantic, this sad woman doesn’t actually show on our radar.

    1. Richard T, It gives me hope that Sarah doesn’t show up yet on your radar. I am worried however that she might sneek up on you too, so tell people to beware! See my post coming momentarily re PDS. Thanks Malia

  13. What Nugent sees as a hard work ethic is actually Palin’s untiring ability to gladhand and play the beauty pageant contestant at all times.

It would be kind of sad that she’s still this smiling, waving, fake personality, but the fact that she’s confusing politics with show business is pretty scary.

It’s never occurred to her that she should actually study, observe and learn something, to make her better qualified and prepared for the jobs she appears to want.

At least Bush chose smart people to do the work for him. Palin prefers to surround herself with old classmates, who display no other ability but loyalty to their meal-ticket.

    1. JCos, Thank God she doesn’t have the intellectual ability to chose good people to surround herself, so that she might have been able to convince more people if she had been smart enough. Thank God for small things! Malia
